Please join me on my favorite Amazon river trip and nature tour as we explore Brazil’s astonishing rivers, the wildest waterways in the world.
This trip up the Amazon, Solimoes and Negro Rivers is a wonderful adventure, suitable for a beginning naturalist or an experienced ecotraveler. We settle in on board the comfortable and well-equipped L/V Dorinha, a 12-cabin ship solely occupied by our group. The food on board is delicious, featuring local and international cuisine, fresh fish, fruits and vegetables. What makes this trip so special is that the captain and crew will do everything they can to make the experience a great one for everyone on board. Our ship is small enough to enter tributaries that are inaccessible to cruise ships, and we can penetrate even deeper into the flooded forest using our motorized flat-bottomed canoes. Highly skilled boatmen take us out by canoe for wildlife viewing, and at night we use spotlights to search for nocturnal creatures. We will see numerous river dolphins, three-toed sloths, toucans, and parrots, as well as other less well-known animals and birds. There will also be time to relax, fish for piranha, enjoy the breeze as we drift along the river, loll in a hammock or swim in the wonderfully refreshing blackwaters.
On this unique trip we will visit the acidic waters of the Rio Negro where there are very few biting insects and abundant wildlife. We enter some of the most pristine waterways in the Amazonian region where we can feel as early explorers did when they first encountered these mighty forests. Our legendary captain, Moacir Fortes Junior, will tell us about his life and adventures as we seek out hidden jewels – a blue morpho butterfly, epiphytic cactus in bloom, or colony of tiny bats.
This trip introduces us to more than just the nature, but also the cultural aspects of river life, and we have time to visit the Opera House and fish market in Manaus, thus rounding our experience and enjoyment of Brazil.

Review: The March 2019 Amazon Adventure was my second trip with Fiona Reid; I choose her tours because she focuses especially on mammals while still enjoying the full diversity of flora and fauna on display. And this most recent trip certainly delivered! Fiona is an amazing guide, very knowledgeable, and an excellent spotter. Among a stunning variety of plants, trees, and beautiful flowers, I personally saw 19 species of herptiles, 174 types of birds, and 42 different mammals including my favourites, 20 species of bats! We spent the two weeks on board a beautiful and surprisingly comfortable river boat, with an amazing crew, and excellent food. And what a variety of experiences! We swam in the rivers, fished for piranhas, explored the various ecosystems by canoe and by foot, at dawn, in the afternoons and evenings, and at night. The nocturnal outings were a particular highlight for me! The trip was well organised, jam-packed with adventures, and Fiona went to great lengths to find out what the various participants were hoping to experience and to try to make that happen. And she did! I highly recommend this trip to everyone. It is an experience you will never forget. Lorysa C., Ontario, Canada
