Honduran White Bats by Dick Wilkins
February 11-24, 2011
Costa Rica is one of my favourite countries. This newly designed tour takes us to a wide variety of habitats in this small but highly diverse country. Each lodge is well-positioned for local exploration and relaxation, and we move at a leisurely pace, spending three nights at each major destination. From San Jose we head to the dry northwest. Here we spend a day in Palo Verde National Park, where huge numbers of wildfowl concentrate in the receding waters. We’ll see Mantled Howlers, Green Iguanas and much more, with easy viewing made possible by low, open forest and grasslands. We take a float trip on the Tempisque River for more wildlife watching.

Next we venture up to cloud forest around Arenal Volcano where we spend a day exploring the forest canopy from hanging bridges. We’ll be able to see the volcano glowing at night from our lodge. We then move to the Atlantic lowlands where we stay at a rainforest lodge with an abundance of animal life on our doorstep. We visit La Selva Biological Station for a day, and have a trip to Tirimbina, where we should see Honduran White Bats, and with luck an anteater, sloth or porcupine, as well as numerous colourful birds.
Our last port of call is Savegre Mountain Lodge, home to the Resplendent Quetzal, an array of hummingbirds, and fascinating oak forest. We take a day trip above the tree line into the unique Paramo habitat before returning to San Jose for a last night at our comfortable lodge with its expansive gardens. We will be accompanied by expert local guide, Luis Torres, and perhaps the world’s greatest driver, Pablo Vargas.
